The Flywheel Effect

July 20, 2022

A Flywheel is a mechanical device which is designed to store kinetic energy and smooth out the power of an engine. It is also a principle that can be applied to Sales and Marketing. Watch the short video below to hear more about what I mean.

"Once you reduce that energy or stop it, the Flywheel begins to slow down and, if you ignore it too long, you will have to apply copious amounts of energy to get it moving once again."

Flywheels, like Sales and Marketing, require a LOT of energy to get moving initially but, once the momentum is in place, the energy required to keep them moving is diminished. The key is to constantly apply energy to maintain the momentum. Once you reduce that energy or stop it, the Flywheel begins to slow down and, if you ignore it too long, you will have to apply copious amounts of energy to get it moving once again.

As we now enter into an economic retraction, many business leaders will make the significant mistake of reducing their investment in Sales and Marketing. This is such a bad move at ANY time, but especially in challenging economic conditions because the momentum of that flywheel will diminish even faster than it normally would. The outcomes of that reduced momentum can be devastating to your business very quickly. The best you can hope for is to weather the storm but, even then, you will have to apply exponentially more energy to get it moving again on the other side.

Wouldn't it be easier to maintain that momentum constantly? I hope the answer is now obvious.
